Alloy wheel on a vehicle

New wheels can transform how a car looks and, done right, how it drives. But an upgrade is not always the bargain it seems, so it pays to know when it is worth it.

Good reasons to upgrade

  • A current wheel is cracked, badly bent or corroded
  • You want a lighter wheel for sharper handling
  • You are fitting bigger brakes that need more clearance
  • You want a different look or a tougher wheel for touring

What to watch for

Keep the overall tyre and wheel diameter close to standard so your speedo stays accurate and there is no rubbing. Match the bolt pattern and offset to your car, and keep the load rating right, especially on 4WDs and vans. Going much larger often means lower-profile tyres, which can firm up the ride and are easier to damage on potholes.
