4WD on rough terrain

No single tyre is perfect everywhere off-road. Sand, mud and rock each ask different things of your tyres, so the best choice comes down to where you spend most of your time.

Sand

On sand, flotation is king. A wider tyre run at low pressure spreads the load and stops you sinking. Aggressive mud tread is not needed and can actually dig you in. A good all-terrain, aired down, works well.

Mud

Mud needs a chunky, open tread that bites and then clears itself as the wheel turns. A dedicated mud-terrain tyre shines here, though it is noisier and wears faster on the highway.

Rock

Rocky tracks reward a tough tyre with strong sidewalls that resist cuts and punctures. Lowering pressure helps the tyre wrap around rocks for grip, and a higher load rating adds durability.

The all-rounder

For most touring that mixes bitumen with tracks, a quality all-terrain is the sensible compromise. If you favour one extreme terrain, lean your choice that way.
