A snorkel is one of those 4WD additions people fit for the look as much as the function. So what does it actually do, and is it worth it for the way you drive?
More than water crossings
The obvious job is raising the air intake for water crossings, reducing the risk of drawing water into the engine. But for most Australian touring, the bigger benefit is dust. Up high, the intake pulls in cleaner, cooler air than down near the wheels on a dusty outback road, which is kinder to your air filter and engine.
Who benefits most
If you tackle real water crossings or spend a lot of time on dusty corrugated roads, a snorkel is a sensible upgrade. For a 4WD that mostly sees the highway and the odd gravel road, it is more of a styling choice.
Fitting matters
A snorkel only does its job if it is sealed properly all the way to the airbox. A poor install can actually let in more dust and water, so it is worth having it fitted correctly.
