Extra carrying space up top is one of the most useful upgrades for a touring vehicle. The choice usually comes down to a set of bars with a basket, or a full flat platform. Both have their strengths.
Roof racks and baskets
A bar-and-basket setup is lighter, cheaper and easy to fit and remove. It is ideal if you only need extra space now and then for camping gear or longer items, and it keeps weight and wind noise down for everyday driving.
Roof platforms
A full platform gives you a strong, flat base for a rooftop tent, awnings, recovery boards, water and more, with plenty of mounting points. It suits dedicated touring rigs, but it is heavier and that weight sits up high, which affects handling and fuel use.
Watch your roof load limit
Every vehicle has a maximum roof load, and weight up high raises your centre of gravity. Load heavy items low and inside where you can, and keep the roof for lighter, bulky gear.
