Used tyres can look like a bargain, and sometimes they are a reasonable short-term fix. But there are real risks to weigh up before you fit second-hand rubber to your car.
The appeal of used tyres
The obvious draw is price. For a car you are about to sell, or to get through to payday, a good used tyre with plenty of tread can make sense.
The risks
You cannot always see a used tyre’s history. It may have hidden internal damage from a pothole or a previous puncture, it may be older than it looks, and the tread may be unevenly worn. Any of these can affect grip and safety in ways that are not obvious until it is too late.
If you do buy used
Check the date code, look for even wear with no cracks or bulges, and have the tyre inspected before it goes on. Never mix very different tyres across an axle.
The bottom line
