How it works
A second, deep-cycle battery powers your camp gear, kept separate from the battery that starts the engine. A smart isolator or DC to DC charger tops up the second battery while you drive and protects your starter battery so it is always ready to go.
Under-bonnet or in the tub
The second battery can sit under the bonnet where there is room, or in a tray or box in the back. Many tourers also add solar to keep the auxiliary battery charged while camped for a few days.
Size it to your gear
The right battery and charger depend on what you run and for how long. A weekend with a fridge needs less than a week off-grid. Getting the setup matched to your needs avoids wasting money or running short of power.
