An Adelaide summer is hard on tyres. Hot bitumen, long drives and higher speeds all add heat, and heat is what most often pushes a tired tyre over the edge. A little care keeps you safe through the warm months.
Why heat matters
As tyres heat up, the air inside expands and the rubber works harder. An underinflated or worn tyre runs hotter still, which is how summer blowouts happen, especially on a loaded car heading away for the holidays.
Check pressures more often
Check your pressures every few weeks in summer and before any long trip, always when the tyres are cold. Correct pressure is your best defence against heat build-up. Add a little extra if you are carrying a full load or towing.
Look for ageing and cracks
UV and heat speed up rubber ageing, so check the sidewalls for fine cracks, and remember tyres older than about six years deserve a close look even with good tread.
Before the big trip
Have your tread, pressures, alignment and spare checked before you head off. It is a quick job that can save a roadside drama in the heat.
