4WD on the open road

Towing a caravan or camper opens up the whole country, but it asks more of your 4WD and of you as a driver. Getting the basics right keeps everyone safe and your vehicle healthy.

Know your weights

This is the part people get wrong. Your vehicle has limits for towing capacity, towball download and a combined weight for the car and trailer together. Loading beyond these is unsafe and illegal, so weigh your setup and stay within every limit.

The right towbar and wiring

A towbar rated for your load, correct wiring for the trailer lights, and a brake controller for heavier vans are all essential. These need to be fitted properly to be safe and legal.

Drive to suit

Allow more room to stop, brake earlier, take corners wide and watch for sway in crosswinds or when trucks pass. Your brakes, cooling system and tyres all work harder when towing, so keep them in good order.

We fit rated towbars and brake controllers and check your vehicle is ready to tow. Talk to us about towing setups at our Stepney workshop, close to Maylands, or book a time.
