Material and weight
Steel bars are the strongest and best for serious touring and animal protection, but they are heavy. Alloy bars are lighter, which is easier on your suspension and fuel use, while still offering good protection for most drivers.
Airbag compliance is essential
This is the big one. Any bar you fit must be airbag compatible for your vehicle so it does not interfere with how the airbags deploy. A compliant, properly fitted bar keeps your car safe and legal. This is not the place to cut corners.
Think about what you will mount
If you plan to add driving lights, an aerial or a winch, choose a bar designed to carry them. Fitting it all at once is tidier and avoids drilling later.
