If you drive a 4WD or SUV, one of the bigger tyre decisions is whether to run all-terrain or highway tyres. The right choice comes down to how you actually use the vehicle.
Highway tyres
Highway or road-going tyres are built for sealed roads. They are quieter, smoother, last longer and use less fuel. If your 4WD mostly does the school run, commuting and the occasional gravel road, highway tyres are usually the sensible pick.
All-terrain tyres
All-terrains have a more aggressive tread and tougher construction for dirt, sand, mud and rock. They give you real confidence off the bitumen and resist cuts and punctures better. The trade-offs are more road noise, slightly higher fuel use and a shorter tread life on the highway.
How to choose
Be honest about your split between road and off-road. If you tour, camp or hit tracks often, all-terrains earn their keep. If those trips are rare, you may be better with highway tyres and airing down or hiring when you do head bush.
